The immune system of human’s body gets attacked by the HIV virus. HIV is the virus of serious kind and it destroys a specific type of cells in human body. Those cells play an important part in the working of immune system. They fight from the infections and bacteria and once the HIV attacks these cells, these cells are destroyed and the working of immune system gets imperfect and the human body is no more in the condition to survive against germs and bacterial infections. In USA, according to a survey more men than women fall a prey to HIV yearly. People who suffer from HIV can get better healthy lives by getting an effective treatment based on the antiretroviral medicines. These medicines lessen the intensity of HIV in human body and also reduce the chance of transmitting this disease from an effected person to the non effected one.
This guide will let you have a better and clear understanding of the HIV symptoms in men and also the treatment this virus.
Men related symptoms
In men, when the virus has recently attacked, the signs and symptoms are not clear and are also not identifiable on the early stages. This means that the signs and symptoms on the early stages of HIV in men are unspecific and vague.
The initial symptoms of HIV in men are usually unspecific and vague. The virus when is on its initial stages have the bearable symptoms and sometimes people mistaken HIV as flu or any other weather conditions because of the nature of its initial symptoms.
Most of the times, people don’t really understand that they are having the symptoms of HIV and they mistake it as flu due to which they delay in seeing a doctor until the disease or the infection worsens. They take time in consulting a doctor and in that time the disease becomes advanced and even dangerous. This is also a fact that most of the men don’t get time to consult a doctor for treatment and this is the key reason that more men then the women get severely affected by this virus.
However this is not the case with every man. There could be some other symptoms on the initial stage other than the flue and cold. The other severe symptoms include:
- Sudden and unexplainable weight loss.
- Fatigue and weakness
In some serious cases, the virus can also progress to sudden happening of AIDS.
Early HIV symptoms in men:
In men, the early signs and the symptoms of HIV are almost the same but they could be misunderstood by the affected person based on the sign and symptom he is having and there is a high chance that the person could mistaken HIV as minor health condition.
Almost all the men who are infected from HIV experience flu like symptoms in the start of the viral infection and within some days or weeks, the symptoms strengthens and take new form. This may include:
- Minor or high fevers with mild headaches.
- Skin rashes or any form of minor skin allergy.
- Sore throat
- Severe headaches
- Tiredness and laziness.
There could be some less common symptoms of HIV which are not found in every men who has been effected from HIV virus but still they could be happened in some effected persons.
- Sweating in night
- Severe ulcers in mouth
- Nausea and vomiting
- Ulcers on genitals
- Sore muscles
- Body pains and pain in joint
- Swollen lymph nodes
HIV in men and women
HIV is a serious and severe health problem in the whole world and scientists and researchers are trying to find ways to cure this disease and to find the treatment for HIV. But still after too much research and progress in the field of medicine and treatment of HIV, it is considered to be one of the most serious health conditions. According to the survey that has been done in the year 2016 by the Center for Disease Prevention and Control there is an estimate that 39,782 people have HIV in the US. Anyhow the number of people who were diagnosed from the HIV in US has decreased from 5 percent between the year 2011 and 2015. In 2015 there were still 1.1 million people who suffered from HIV in US. The number of men suffering from HIV is more than the women who suffered from the same virus. In the year 2010, a survey was conducted and according to that 76 percent people out of 100 infected from HIV was male and the left 24 percent were female. The latest diagnosis have also found the large number of people suffering from HIV were male. The frequency of HIV in some groups is also different from the other groups and more than 70 percent of the HIV in people gets spread by having sexual contact with the affected person. Injection drug use can also be the major cause of occurrence of HIV in men.
HIV in men usually progresses through three basic stages and every stage have got its own characteristics and symptoms which can differ from person to person depending on some factors.
- Acute phase
Acute phase is also referred to as the early stage of HIV and it may include the basic symptoms and signs that are flu and fever. This stage in normal cases lasts not more than four weeks and it is not necessary that every person will observe the symptoms and take it serious. Typical symptoms at this stage of HIV are almost similar to as flu and they might include sickness, chills and fever. There is a chance that most of the people don’t even realize in the early stage that they have been fell a prey to HIV. They might consider these symptoms to be of fever or flu. In this first stage, the virus is present in a significant amount in the blood of the infected person and there is more chance of the other people to get infected from the virus. If someone feels like the signs and the symptoms he is having are of HIV virus, he must consult a doctor in time and get his tests done.
2. Clinical latency
This is the second stage of HIV virus and this stage can last even for years. This stage can last for even more than 10 years if the affected person doesn’t receive the treatment of the virus. Normally this virus lasts for so long in the people who don’t have any apparent symptoms of the virus and they don’t even know that they are infected from HIV. On the stage 2 of HIV, medical treatment and medications under antiretroviral therapy can be a better cure to the virus. Controlling the virus means that the virus will not progress further and the signs and symptoms will stop at the moment the treatment starts working. The virus control also means that the virus will not transmit in the other people.
In this stage, the virus still reproduces itself and sometimes it is also not detectable in testing. If someone has got the virus in his bloodstream and it remains undetectable for minimum 6 months then the virus can’t even pass on to the unaffected persons through sex.
In this stage, the HIV still keeps on multiplying but it multiplies at lower level than the first phase of HIV.
This is the most serious and severe stage of HIV virus and at this stage, the virus completely destroys the body’s immune system. At this stage, the symptoms are easily identifiable. The basic symptoms of this stage include the following:
- High fever
- Unexplainable chills
- Unexplainable weight loss without any apparent reason
- Weakness and fatigue
At this stage of HIV virus, the immune system of human body is at its weakest state and the infections completely destroy the human body.
Diagnosis Men vs. Women
HIV is diagnosed in men and women both and this diagnosis is done by testing the blood and also the saliva samples. Although a urine sample can also be tested. The test for HIV takes maximum 12 weeks to test the antibodies present in the blood, urine and saliva of the affected person. There is another test that can be done to detect HIV in a human and this detects the HIV related antigens in the human body. Normally both of these tests are conducted to do a better diagnosis of HIV in men as well as in women. Home tests could also be done and for this you don’t need to do a proper visit to hospital and the results for those tests are immediately available to the person. For home tests, blood and saliva is taken as a sample. If the result is positive, you need to consult a doctor immediately. Don’t ignore the HIV symptoms in men and get yourself treated.
